Fast fact: 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can reach your skin, even on a cloudy day. Cover up. Whenever possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants outside. Tightlywoven fabrics provide the best protection fromthe sun’s damaging rays. Top off with a hat. To protect your face, ears, and the back of your neck fromthe sun, wear a hat with a broad rimall theway around. Remember to wear sunglasses. Wraparound sunglasses—that block 99 to 100 percent of all UV light—are the best choice. Slather on sunscreen. Go for one that offers broad-spectrumprotection, has an SPF of 30 or higher, and is water-resistant. “It’s important that you apply sunscreen 20 to 30minutes before going outside,”Dr. Hong says. “Then reapply every two hours or after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.” Time your outdoor workouts. Exercise during the coolest part of the day. You’ll reduce your risk of heat rash and heat-related illness. Blot sweat. Use a clean towel or cloth.Wiping can irritate your skin and cause breakouts if you’re prone to acne. Make a splash. Shower immediately after a dip in the pool. Post shower, apply creamor lotion to slightly damp skin to help lock inmoisture.
